What is MASS MEDIA?
Refers to every medium or source which is used
to connect or communicate with a large # of
people at once.
Mass Media is communication whether written,
broadcasted or spoken that reaches a large
audience. This includes television, radio,
internet, newspapers, etc.

COMMUNICATION
Sender – a source/sender puts a message on a
channel (medium)
that delivers the MESSAGE to the RECEIVER.
FEEDBACK occurs when the receiver
responds, and that response changes
subsequent messages from the
source.

In the United States, all media are
privately owned except the Public
Broadcasting Service (PBS) AND
National Public Radio (NPR)
There are three types of ownership
1) Privately owned
2) Publicly (government) owned
3) hybrid (A MIX OF BOTH)
YOUR TASK – Type work
1) Explain how media works in China, North
Korea , Libya, Cuba and Syria.
2) Find an article that exemplifies the oppressive
nature of government owned media in one or
more of these countries.
3) With a partner, describe what the United
States media would look like if we had
government owned media.
