How is Twillingate Unique?
Why study bulletin boards???
• They seem to be an important communication tool,
because we find them in every community.
• But we don’t know very much about how they are used.
• What is their role in relation to other communication
tools, such as newspapers, radio, and television?
• What can we learn about the differences between
communities by studying their bulletin boards?
What did we find in Twillingate?
We found 23 Bulletin Boards…
These were in private businesses, a church, the town
office, and the public library.
In comparison with some other
communities…
• We found that Twillingate’s bulletin boards
had a much lower percentage of
‘commercial’ postings.
And a much higher percentage of ‘informal
economy’ postings.
What might be the reasons for this?
• We also found that Twillingate had much
fewer notices posted having to do with
community events or voluntary
associations.
