Development of biowaste separate collection schemes in urban
areas: The cases of Athens and Kifissia
LIFE10 ENV/GR/605

Chemical Engineer MSc, EPTA S.A.
Why Biowaste Separation at Source?
 EU Directive 2008/98/EC promotes separate collection
 Law 4042/2012 sets targets for separate collection (5% by weight - 2015 &
10% by weight- 2020)
 Production of High Quality Compost
 3 New Composting Plants in the Greater Athens area are foreseen
(160.000tn)
 Utilise the Composting unit of the existing MBT plant in Ano Liosia
Biowaste
 bio-waste means biodegradable garden and park waste, food and kitchen
waste from households, restaurants, caterers and retail premises and
comparable waste from food processing plants

Integrated MSW Management
Prevention Measures
Separate Collection of
Recyclables  MRFs
25-50% MSW
Separate Collection of Biowaste
 Composting/AD plants
8-15% MSW
Residual Waste  Treatments
Plants
35-65% MSW
Residues  Landfill
What are the steps for a Biowaste Source Separation
Scheme?
Start from
selecting a pilot
area
Plan the
Collection
System

Communication
Campaign
Start from selecting a Pilot Area
1.
 The pilot area shall have some of the following characteristics:
▫ Be easy to start with
▫ Be representative of the Municipality
▫ Include large Biowaste Producers
▫ Has defined boundaries (e.g. a neighborhood, city centre)
 For monitoring and expanding the collection scheme, it is good to
know:
▫ Population Density
▫ Building Coefficient
▫ Price Zone (Living Standard)
▫ Major Facilities (schools, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, etc.)
 Selection can be made either empirical or via GIS models
(at the first case you cannot monitor)

 Dedicated Vehicle and Personnel
 Online fleet management (gps placed on the
