and Childcare Setting
Employability
Employability
Employability is used to describe what it is
about you that makes you ready to take on
a particular job and all its functions
Employability
When we are talking about employability it
means looking at the mixture of the skills,
qualities and attitudes you have with
What employers need from you so that
their service can run efficiently and
smoothly
So ..it isn’t necessarily what we think its
also about what an employer thinks
Employability
There are certain skills all employers say
they need. These include what are often
called the “soft skills” such as
Good communication
“people” skills i.e. the ability to get on with
and work with others
Employability
To be employable may also mean you
need to have the specific skills and
qualifications needed for a particular job
function, so in Early Education and
Childcare this means having an
appropriate level of qualification or the
ability to get to that level of qualification
Employability
 Some of the basic requirements that make us
employable include
 punctuality
 willingness
 the ability to listen
 the ability to follow instructions
 taking responsibility for our actions and showing
responsibility in our actions
 skills of communication
Employability
 Skills of communication include:
 Good oral communication that is the ability to
speak clearly and to articulate what you mean
 Good reading skills
 The ability to write . When you are working with
children there will be reports to write and
observations to keep. You need to be able to
write these down clearly and in a way that others
can understand
Employability
 Good people skills
 Working with children is also about working with parents,
other professionals like teachers or social workers so
you need to be able to express yourself well.
 You need to have appropriate body language in the ways
you express yourself
 Parents and children need to feel you are interested in
what they are saying so the ability to listen actively is
important to your employability
 Team working and the ability to work well with others is
also an important feature of employability.
Employability
 What sometimes makes people unemployable
is:
 Poor timekeeping
 Taking days off here and there
 Not doing what you say you will do
 Being inconsistent in the way you behave – so
being very moody one day and not another
 Being unprofessional e.g. being indiscreet and
breaking confidences, shouting at children
 Being dishonest
