Geography
China is the third largest country in the world
just behind Russia and Canada. China has over
1.2 billion people living there. China has very
diverse land that includes deserts, mountains,
and fertile river basins. Much of western China
is covered by the Himalayan mountain range.
Rivers play an important role in China. They use
them for transportation and irrigation.
Daily Life
Much like today, the ancient Han were
farmers. They lived in mud houses arranged
into villages. Poor farmers used wooden
hand tools instead of oxen. Northern
farmers ate wheat and millet, while Southern
farmers ate rice. Cities were the center for
trade, education, government, and
entertainment. Confucianism became
popular once again, and the Han combined a
strong ruler with strict laws. They believed in
good examples instead of punishment.
Major events
The Han dynasty of ancient China thrived
for four centuries. Following two years of
bitter fighting between rival tribes the
Han were finally restored to power in 25
A.D. Art, literature, philosophy, music, and
state craft were invented in the golden
age of the dynasty. Paying taxes led to an
increase in the popularity of the Buddhist
and Taoist religions.

Art
Chinese arts come in different forms including sculptures,
painting, folk art, silk, calligraphy, papercuts, metal arts, and
pottery. The Chinese painted emperors, landscape, zodiac
animals, flowers, ladies, and birds. Chinese art began over
4000 years ago. We still appreciate the hard work of artists
from thousands of years ago. Their arts are in museums
around the world.
Music
The Chinese used chime bells and flutes to
create music. They thought that music was
used to purify one’s thoughts and
emotions. Sound, they believe, is
influences the harmony of the universe.
Quite recently they opposed music being
performed for entertainment.
Literature
Chinese literature begins with an analogy of 305
lyrics of various types that was comprised in
600 b.c. Written Chinese were carved symbols
that emerged around 6000 years ago.
I have learned that the Han dynasty wasn’t the most
developed dynasty in China’s history. They made an
interesting form of government called Confucianism.
Their music and art are very similar to today. I didn’t
know that the Han dynasty had Eastern and Western
rulers until I started this project.
