1. What is a Dynasty?
Periods ruled by a particular family, usually males
2. What is the Mandate of Heaven?
The idea that God granted emperors the right to rule based on their ability to
govern well—vision of moral behavior
3. Why was the Qin Dynasty so important?
The Qin dynasty united China under one emperor, ended the warring states
period. The land of China was named after this dynasty
4. Who was Confucius?
Developed philosophical and political system that led to more stable state and
society. Look to the past of sage emperors, knowing your place in hierarchical
society. Father and son relationships of respect or ‘superior man’—that makes
society stable
5. What is ‘ren’ and ‘li’?
Ren-’propriety’, proper behavior in any situation
Li-rituals, veneration (honoring) of ancestors
