Zhuang Zhou Dreams of Being a Butterfly 庄周梦蝶
Once upon a time, Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a
butterfly flitting about happily enjoying himself. Suddenly he awoke.
He did not know whether he was Zhou, who had dreamed of being
a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhou.
The Death of Wonton 混沌之死
The emperor of the Southern Seas was Shu 倏, the emperor of the Northern Sea
was Hu 忽, and the emperor of the Center was Hun-dun 混沌. Shu 倏 and Hu 忽
often met each other in the land of Hun-dun, and Hun-dun treated them very well.
Wanting to repay Hun-dun 's kindness, Shu and Hu said, 'All people have seven holes
for seeing, hearing, eating, and breathing, but Hun-dun does not have. Let's chisel
some holes for him.” So every day they chiseled one hole in him, and on the seventh
day Hun-dun died when seven holes completed.

When Zhuangzi was going to Chu, he saw by the roadside a skull, he asked it saying,
"Sir, was it some insatiable ambition that drove you to transgress the law and brought
you to this? Was it the fall of a kingdom, the blow of an executioner's axe that brought
you to this? Or had you done some shameful deed and could not face the reproaches of
father and mother, of wife and child, and so were brought to this? Was it hunger and
cold that brought you to this, or was it that the springs and autumns of your span had
in due course carried you to this?" He then put it under his head as a pillow and went
to sleep. At midnight the skull appeared to him in a dream and said to him, "All that
you said to me is just what I should expect from a live man. Among the dead, none is
king, none is subject, there is no division of the seasons; for us the whole world is
spring, the whole world is autumn. No monarch on his throne has joy greater than ours.
How can you imagine that I would cast away joy greater than that of a king on his
throne, only to go back again to the toils of the living world?"
