villages began with rich and easily farmed ground
villages grew into cities with social classes
Soon, farmers were kept out by city walls.

• farmers lived in mud shacks in
the winter
• lived in these in the summer
• to guard and grow their crops

lower class lived in one room
houses with no windows
nobles and government had huge
houses with courtyards and
balconies

• Separated the Country from the City
• Gates were locked at night
• No one could get in or out
