BELLWORK
1. Describe the geographic features of the Indus River
Valley civilization. (rivers, mountains, etc.)
2. List three achievements made under Harappa rule.
3. Why did Harappa civilization collapse?
4. List three achievements made under Aryan rule.
5. What was the purpose of the Caste System?
6. Who were the “untouchables?”
7. THINKER: Even though the Caste system was
officially abolished, there are still parts of India that
practice it today. Although this system was created
4000 years ago, why do you think people still follow
it?

• No articles on pop culture or sports!
• Pick one that interests you!
• This is worth 20 points and you are NOT
allowed to make it up for late credit.
• If you do not have your article on Friday, you
will be doing a book assignment for ½ credit
during group/class discussion

Shang Dynasty
• 1700BC – 1000BC
• Used large armies, bronze weapons and
chariots to conquer territory
• Priests had the authority to call upon the
gods and predict the future
• Cultural achievements: writing using
characters, bronze objects, ivory, silk,
pottery, and the creation of cities.
Zhou Dynasty
• About 1000BC, Wu killed the Shang king
and established a new dynasty, the Zhou.

• Agricultural system: nobles owned the land
and peasants worked it.
• Technological advances: roads, expanded
foreign trade, obtained horses, the crossbow, iron plows, and flood-control systems.
• Under the Zhou, China became the most
populated country in the world.

Chaldeans, and Persians.

• Summarize the main points! Do not get
too detailed.
• Use pages 38 & 39 in your textbook.
