Shi Huangdi unifies China…
1. Shi Huangdi creates Qin Dynasty in 221 BCE – names himself “The
First Emperor”
2. He builds a strong centralized government by crushing all
opponents and critics. POWERFUL ARMY TO GAIN
CONTROL
3. Ruled China using a LEGALIST system… strict laws with harsh
punishments
4. Burned all books that supported Confucianism.

OUT INVADERS FROM THE NORTH –
(FYI – the part the Qin built is much farther to
the north than most tourists will see)

clay soldiers, horses, chariots to
protect Shi Huangdi after death

• Shi Huangdi dies in 210 BCE
• People revolted because of – heavy taxes/forced labor/cruel policies
• Empire only lasted 14 years – new rulers claimed Mandate of Heaven
