Why was the seismograph such an
important invention?

"A copper kettle with a diameter of six feet hid
and protected the mechanism inside. Eight
dragon heads were placed at regular intervals
around the outside of the kettle. Each dragon
held a metal ball between its movable jaws. Eight
toads, cast in bronze, on the floor opened their
mouths in the direction of the dragons. If an
earthquake struck the locality of the kettle, the
dragon that was looking in the direction of the
oncoming wave opened its mouth. The ball fell
into the toad's mouth, a bell rang, and the
dragon's jaws snapped shut."

