MONGOLS
YOU HAVE 5 min to BRAINSTORM:
WHAT IS A
MONGOL?
What is a Mongol? Let’s
discuss what you came up
with
Mongol was
person from
a nomadic
tribe in
Mongolia, a
territory
North of
China, and
South of
Russia.
Mongols living in several tribes, often attacked the Chinese. In
1206, a man named Temujin united the Mongol tribes into one
large unit. After uniting the Mongols, Temujin became their leader,
and was given the title Genghis (also Chingis) Khan, or “Universal
Ruler.” Genghis Khan would lead the Mongols on a bloody
conquest throughout much of Asia and Eastern Europe, extending
as far west as Vienne, Austria. During conquests, the Mongols
often destroyed entire cities, and would kill all the people of these
cities that would not pledge allegiance to Genghis and the
Mongols.
In 1211 A.D. Genghis
turned his attention
towards China, and in a
matter of 20 years, the
Mongols ruled a large
part of Asia. Genghis
Khan would die in 1227
A.D. but not before all of
Northern China was
under Mongol control.
The Mongols would not stop their
conquests with the death of Genghis Khan.
His sons and grandson’s continued to
expand the Mongol empire and raid Asia
and Europe. In 1260, Kublai Khan became
ruler of the Mongol empire, and by 1279
A.D. the Mongols had seized all of China
under their rule, and Kublai Khan declared
himself emperor of all of China. This
marked not only the first time in history
China was ruled by a foreign presence, but
all the birth of a new dynasty, the Yuan
dynasty.
Although they were not Chinese, and they
used their army to keep an eye on the Chinese,
the Yuan dynasty made huge innovations to
Chinese culture, from the building of palaces,
roads, canals, (although with money that was
taxed from the Chinese), and the Yuan dynasty
opened its ports to foreign travelers to trade,
expanding trade in Asia to the Europe, using
Mongol guards to protect merchants. Much of
what we know about the Mongol empire and
the Yuan dynasty is from foreign travelers, like
Marco Polo, who was a guest in the Khan’s
courts.
Unfortunately, the Yuan dynasty would not last. Not satisfied with
only China, the Mongols made attempts to invade the Japanese
islands in 1276 and again in 1281, and failed both times. This
angered the Chinese, and by 1368 A.D. the Mongols were defeated
by Zhu Yuanzhang, ending the Yuan dynasty, as well as the Mongol
empire in China, and giving rise to the Ming Dynasty. China was
once again ruled by Chinese.
We will now examine: Was the Mongol Empire a
destructive empire, or an innovative empire?
EACH PERSON SHOULD HAVE THEIR
OWN ARGUMENT
DAY TWO
Today you will use the argument you
made yesterday (about the Mongols) to
build an argument tower
Yesterday you developed an argument about
the Mongols. Follow these steps to build your
argument tower:
Step 1) At the top of one of their green 3×5 cards, write the
words “For example, ” At the top of the red/pink card, someone
writes “The reason for this is … ”
Step 2) You will write your argument on the yellow card:
For Example
The reason for this is
The Mongols are:
Each person should now put a piece of
evidence which supports their argument, on a
green card
For Example
Each person should now analyze the reason for
their argument (yellow) on the RED/PINK
card
The reason for this is
WITH YOUR PARTNER you will now build and argument
tower: Cut two spots on your GREEN AND YELLOW cards
For Example
Stack your
argument like
this
NOW
Due by 10PM Tonight!
