What is Leadership?
Leadership has been seen as:
Focus of group processes; a matter of personality;
a matter of inducing compliance; the exercise of
influence; particular behaviors; a form of
persuasion; a power relation; an instrument to
achieve goals; an effect of interaction; initiation
of structure; a sense-making heuristic; a
created social phenomenon; a romantic notion;
and many combinations of the above.
What is a Leader?
A person who knows the way,
walks the way, and shows the way
and then:
impacts the thoughts, feelings, and
behaviors of employees to join the way
Experiential Exercise:
Who is this Leader
There will be a handout (#5)
Motivation & Leadership
Would we rather have:
An army of rabbits led by a lion?
or
An army of lions led by a rabbit?
(Napoleon)
Are the effects of leadership in the eye of the beholder?
Executives: Be Aware!
Beyond Caesar on Leadership ?
Caesar’s Gallic Wars Descriptions (1st Century BC)
Same as (1964) “9-9” Leadership Style Theory
Same as (1953) Initiation/Consideration Theory
How are they going to call it in 2500
Many are Pouring “Old Wine Into New Bottles”
(and charging enormous fees for it)
