IMPERIALSIM
IMPERIALISM
The policy of extending a nations authority by
territorial acquisition or by establishing
economic or political influence over another.
FACTORS CAUSING
IMPERIALISM
• INDUSTRIALIZATION: With U.S. industry booming,
Americans saw a need to find overseas source for raw
materials
• MILITARY: If the United States was to emerge as a
world power, an expanded navy with many ports was
needed. Alfred T. Mahan’s Influence of Sea Power
Upon History a book illustrating how England became
a strong nation through a strong navy.
• IDEAS OF SOCIAL DARWINISM: (survival of the
fittest) the planet belonged to the smartest, strongest
etc.
• OVER SEAS EXPANTIONISTS : Law makers that
wanted to see the US gain overseas territories.
ALASKAN PURCHASE 1867
•Secretary of State William
Seward
•$7.2 million
•Bought from Russia
•Purchased to end Russia's
influence in North America
•Was ridiculed, but later
praised when gold and
later oil was discovered.

HARBOR AT SAMOA
UNITED STATES
INTERESTS IN SAMOA
• U.S. gained the rights to use the harbor as
a coaling station in 1878 from a chief.
• Eng and Ger also secured these rights
• The nations were on the brink of war
when a typhoon sunk many of the ships on
all sides.
•Eng left in 1899 Ger left in 1919 as per the
terms in the Treaty of Versailles ending
WWI

WHAT ARE UNCLE SAM’S INTENTIONS HERE?
WAR WITH SPAIN 1898
APR 20 (Outbreak) AUG 12 (Armistice)
DEC 10 (Treaty of Paris)
Brought on by several factors among there are:
• YELLOW JOURNALISM: Sensationalized human
interest stories involving crimes, and scandal often
times with very little fact, and lots of fluff.
• JINGOISM: American belief that “our culture is better
than your culture.”
• BUSINESS INTERESTS: Agricultural and political
interests abroad.
• SINKING OF MAINE: The USS Maine was sunk
mysteriously in Havana Harbor in Cuba in Feb. 1898
Joseph Pulitzer (NY World) & Randolph Hearst (NY
Journal) stir up anti-Spanish feelings with their papers
and a popular rally cry…“ REMEMBER THE MAINE
AND TO HELL WITH SPAIN………”
The sinking of the boat was accidental, however it gave us a
reason to go to war with Spain. The ship sank when some shells
(next to the boiler room) got hot and blew a hole in the side of the
boat under the waterline.
Is “Yellow Journalism”
being used in this
cartoon?
THE CARIBBEAN FRONT
• The army was very
poorly trained
• Poor leadership and no
accurate maps
• Spoiled food
• Ammunition that did not
match the weapons
• Tropical diseases
• Old Civil War leftovers
• Ill-prepared fighting
men
• More men died in this
war from bad food than
from bullets
• Yellow fever and
Malaria
TEDDY ROOSEVELT ROUGH RIDERS
An unusual mix of college athletes, cowboys, and indians
as well as wealthy easterners made up this outfit.
Many were from western states such as NM AZ OK the
common thread was that they spoke Spanish and could
ride a horse.
Big victory was at San Juan hill in Cuba as the 10th
cavalry (John J. Pershing) helped Roosevelt and the
Rough Riders, on July 1 1898.
PHILIPPINES
• February 25th commodore Dewey got orders to take
his fleet to Manila Harbor “just in case”
• May 1st he brings his fleet along side a much larger
force, but Dewey’s boats are more heavily armed.
• The U.S. fired for several hours until every Spanish
ship was at the bottom of the harbor.
• Casualties 381 Spanish sailors and 1 overweight U.S.
engineer.
• For the next 11 months the Americans fought alongside
the Filipino rebels until the Spanish ground forces
surrendered. General Aguinaldo then turned his
Filipinos against the Americans, this uprising was put
down and the Philippines gained full independence at
the end of World War II in 1946.

TEDDY’S BIG DITCH
In 1884 the French attempted to build a
canal, but high costs and 20,000
workers killed by Malaria and Yellow
Fever put the project on the shelf.
• In 1903 Panama with help from the
U.S. gained independence from
Columbia.
• The Hay-Bunau Varilla treaty gave
the United States.
1. 10 mile wide canal zone
2. Cost was at $10 million, and $250 K
rent starting after 9 years.
3. The U.S. had the right to intervention
should any countries cause problems
in the canal zone.
Ships pass through the canal
like one goes up and down a
flight of stairs

ONTO AA WORLD
WORLD STAGE
ONTO
STAGE
With the United States successful
in it’s first bid at imperialism,
many Americans felt as if we were
ready to get more involved in
world affairs.
There are many others who felt as
if the U. S. should just mind it’s
own business. None the less
America had emerged as a world
power
