JOHN ROLFE & TOBACCO
John Rolfe was a tobacco
entrepreneur who married
Pocahontas, the daughter of
the Algonquian Chief, gave
peace between settlers and
Indians.
Agreement signed by 41 men
before leaving the Mayflower that
outlined a form of government
based on social compact. Obey
the laws passed by the group was
the philosophy that set a
precedent for later documents in
the development of selfgovernment in America

A committee of Ben Franklin, John Adams,
Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and
Thomas Jefferson wrote the declaration
to declare the 13 colonies as independent
states, free from the rule of Great Britain.
The preamble contains the three primary
reasons.
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one
people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them
with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the
separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's
God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind
requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the
separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created
equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain
unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the
pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are
instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of
the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes
destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to
abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on
such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them
shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
The war for independence fought between the 13
colonies and Britain. The war began in April 1775.


Problems with the Articles of Confederation
Congress had powers limited to creating laws
and entering into treaties
Congress could not tax (money by donation only)
Congress could not regulate trade
Congress could not control coinage (many forms of
money)
The new constitution address these problems and set forth
the foundations of the government we have today.

We the people of the United States, in order to form
a more perfect union, establish justice, insure
domestic tranquility, provide for the common
defense, promote the general welfare, and secure
the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our
posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution
for the United States of America.

consisting of about 800,000
square miles of mostly
uncharted land extending
from the Mississippi River to
the Rocky mountains, was
purchased from France for a
mere $15 million by
President Thomas Jefferson.
Assess why this purchase was perhaps one of the most
valuable land buys in US history.
The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United
States. As Lewis and Clark explored the area with the help
of their Native American guide, Sacagawea, it proved to
contain valuable natural resources.

brought forth on this continents a new
nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated
to the proposition that all men are created
equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil
war, testing whether that nation or any
nation so conceived and so dedicated, can
long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a
portion of that field, as a final resting place
for those who here gave their lives that that
nation might live…. -
