The Cast of the Cuban Missile Crisis
Who was involved?
• John F. Kennedy (USA), Fidel Castro
(Cuba), & Nikita Khrushchev (USSR).
The Cuban Missile Crisis: What happened?
The Soviets wanted to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When this
was discovered by the US Air Force in October 1962, Kennedy
imposed a quarantine (a separation or isolation) on all offensive
weapons bound for Cuba. The world trembled as it was on the brink

Critical Thinking Questions:
1. When President Kennedy ordered the Soviet
Union to remove the missiles from Cuba, he also
ordered a blockade of the island. How would the
blockade have helped Kennedy achieve his
objective of getting missiles out of Cuba?
2. How would you have handled that crisis as
President of the United States?
3. Why were Soviet missiles stationed in Cuba a
threat to the United States?
4. Why would you consider the Cold War, cold
rather than HOT?
