Aim: How did tensions of the Cold
War lead to the Cuban Missile Crisis?
Do Now: copy the domain-specific vocabulary:
1. John F. Kennedy: 35th President of the USA (1961-63).
2. Nikita Khrushchev: led the USSR during part of the Cold War
(after Stalin, from 1953-1964).
3. Fidel Castro : Communist dictator of Cuba from 1961-2011. He
is responsible for making Cuba a socialist country which has
often been at odds with the United States. Notably, the Bay of
Pigs Invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
4. Cuban Missile Crisis : An intense crisis that developed in 1961 as
a result of Castro’s decision to allow the Soviet Union to base
nuclear missiles in Cuba.
The Cold War
• Arms Race – buildup of nuclear weapons;
MAD (mutually assured destruction).
• Space Race – competition to achieve
advancements in space (satellites, walking on
the moon, etc.)
• Germany & Berlin:
– West Germany (Democratic) & East Germany
(Communist).
– West Berlin (Democratic) & East Berlin
(Communist); the Berlin Wall (Communists keep
people from fleeing from East to West).

Who was involved?
• John F. Kennedy (USA), Fidel Castro
(Cuba), & Nikita Khrushchev (USSR).
The Cuban Missile Crisis: What happened?
The Soviets wanted to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When this
was discovered by the US Air Force in October 1962, Kennedy
imposed a quarantine (a separation or isolation) on all offensive
weapons bound for Cuba. The world trembled as it was on the brink
of nuclear war…

Union to remove the missiles from Cuba, he also
ordered a blockade of the island. How would the
blockade have helped Kennedy achieve his
