Manifest Destiny
EQ: Was the United States justified in
expanding the nation during the 1800s?

What is “Manifest Destiny”?
•Belief that the US should expand its territory from coast to coast
•It was “Obvious” that the United States should expand its territory.

Importance?

Americans wanted to obtain Florida because Indians
were raiding America and slaves escaped to Florida.

Jackson was ordered to chase Indians back to
Florida but instead he invade the territory.

President Monroe did not want war but told Spain
govern Florida or get out.
•
Spain decided to get out.
•
America agreed to pay $5 million and honor Spain’s
claim to Texas

Importance?
• Americans thought Texas was valuable because could grow
cotton.
• A few Americans started a colony in Texas, which was
controlled by Mexico
• Tension started to mount between Texans & Mexicans
• Due to the tension, Mexico closed the border to U.S.
immigration.
• Instead, Texans rebelled and after a war Texans won
• Texas became an independent nation in 1836 and a battled
enraged to annex the territory
• For annexation: Added another slave state
• Against annexation: Could lead to war with Mexico

Importance?
• Claimed by four countries (Russia, Spain , Great Britain, &
United States)
• Both Russia and Spain gave up their claim to Oregon.
• America and Great Britain agreed to joint occupation
• American missionaries began to move to the territory because
of the fertile land.
• During Polk’s presidential election, Americans demanded
“54° 40’ or fight!”
• Polk did not want to go to war so he create a treaty.
• Britain compromised at the 49th parallel & U.S. accepted
• Argument against treaty: wanted ALL of Oregon
• This still the western border between the U.S. and Canada

Importance?
• Polk offers to buy territory from Mexico but they
refused
• America decided to invade Mexico and war broke out
• After fierce battling, America won the war
• In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico gave up
half of all its territory and the US offers to pay $5
million for the land
• Argument for treaty: added land to the U.S.
• Argument against treaty: had no right to this land
• This land was known as the Mexican Cession
