Vocation
• Temperance (I was one of the founders of the
Women’s Christian Temperance Union, or the
WCTU)
• Women’s Suffrage, but mainly temperance.
Background
Education—I attended Milwaukee Normal
Institute and North Western Female College in
Illinois.
Religion—I am a Methodist.
Relationship with parents—My dad died when I
was in my 20’s and that began a series of
unfortunate events. Her parents were really
active in society and exposed her to
progressive ideas early in life.
Defining Moments
My father and sister died around the same time my
brother became and alcoholic and the woman I loved
got married to my brother. I did a fifty day speaking
tour along the American East Coast and delivered
400 lectures a year for about 10 years. I was elected
president of the national WCTU in 1876 and was
elected first president of the National Council of
Women of the United States in 1888 and held that
position the rest of my life.
Greatest Contribution
Although I did not live to see these, my greatest
contribution to the Progressive Movement
was my work resulting in the ratification of the
eighteenth and nineteenth amendments to
the United States Constitution, permitting
women to vote and prohibiting the sale or use
of alcohol in America.
