Transcript Systems of the Human Body

Mr. Vais
3/27/11
What is a System?
 How do they work?
 How have they evolved?
 What are some of the Systems in our body?
Systems we will cover
 Circulatory
 Digestive
 Endocrine
 Immune
 Muscular/Skeletal
 Nervous
 Reproductive
 Respiratory
 Urinary
Circulatory System
 Function
- pumping and channeling blood to and from the body
and lungs with heart, blood, and blood vessels.
 Components
- Heart, Veins, Blood Vessels
 Key Words
- Pulmonary Circulation
- Systemic Circulation

Digestive System
 Function
-digestion and processing food. with salivary glands,
esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas,
intestines, rectum, and anus.
 Components/Key Words
- salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder,
pancreas, intestines, rectum, and anus.
 Key Learning Target
-How does our body use this system to create energy?

Endocrine System
 Function
- communication within the body using hormones
made by endocrine glands.
 Components
- Glands (pituitary, adrenal)
- thyroid and parathyroid
 Key Learning Target
- How does our body communicate, and what signals are
used for the communication?

Immune System
 Function
- This system aids our body in fighting off disease
 Components
- leukocytes, tonsils, adenoids, thymus, and spleen
 Key Learning Target
-
Muscular/ Skeletal System
 Function
- Muscular system aids the body in movement, while
Skeletal system provides support and protection
 Components
- Names/ Types of muscles, contraction/ extension
- Names of Bones, Types of Joints
*Will be a difficult section if you are unable to recognize
location and name of muscles or bones
Pictures of Muscular System
*not required to know entire diagram, required will
be given in class

Nervous System
 Function
- collecting, transferring and processing information
with brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and nerves
 Components
- How are signals sent an received?
- Central Nervous System
- Peripheral Nervous System
- What is the role of a Neuron
Picture of the Nervous System
Reproductive System
 Function
- Sex organs used for reproduction in the male and
female
 Components
- Male reproduction organs
- Female Reproduction organs
- Cycles of each, reproductive maturity, process of
fertilization
Respiratory System
 Function
- Organs used for breathing to supply the blood with
oxygen
 Components
- Process of breathing
- How does our body process the oxygen we breathe?
- What happens when you become short of breathe?
Picture of Respiratory System
Urinary System
 Function
- Liquid balance within the body, excretes urine which is
liquid waste to the body
 Components
- Know organs involved (Kidneys, Bladder, Urethra)
- How does liquid pass through the body, both as useful
liquid and waste?
- Know the importance of liquid to run all our other
body systems
Picture of Urinary System
1. Human urinary system: 2. Kidney, 3. Renal pelvis,
4. Ureter, 5. Urinary bladder, 6. Urethra. (Left side
with frontal section)
7. Adrenal gland
Vessels: 8. Renal artery and vein, 9. Inferior vena
cava, 10. Abdominal aorta, 11. Common iliac artery
and vein
With transparency: 12. Liver, 13. Large intestine, 14.

Other Important Information for Unit
 Recognition that for each of these systems there is
disease and complications that can arise
- To successfully understand this unit you must not only
know functions of these systems, but recognize the
problems that can arise within each of them
 Included in this unit will be recognizing the
evolutionary trends that took place between higher
order organisms

Study Advice for Unit
 Vocabulary Words
- Each system will come with its own set of Vocabulary
words. KNOW THEM!!!!!! Each word will help
understand how the individual parts function as a
system.
 Diagrams
- Very useful for understanding the path from start to
finish of each system. Also, aids with recognition of
parts and their locations.
