Did you know??
1. The adult body is made up of: 100 trillion cells, 206 bones, 600 muscles, and 22 internal organs.
2. Every square inch of the human body has about 19 million skin cells.
3. The average human head has about 100,000 hairs.
4. The circulatory system of arteries, veins, and capillaries is about 60,000 miles long.
5. The heart beats more than 2.5 billion times in an average lifetime.
6. There are about 9,000 taste buds on the surface of the tongue, in the throat, and on the roof of the
mouth.
7. The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.
8. The largest organ in the body is the skin.
9. The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body, it can squirt blood 30 feet.
10. When you sneeze, all bodily functions stop ... Even your heart.
11. You blink over 10,000,000 times a year.
12. It takes about 20 seconds for a red blood cell to circle the whole body.
13. Only 7% of the population are left handed.
14. There are 28 bones in your foot alone.
15. The average person falls asleep in seven minutes.
16. Children tend to grow faster in the spring.

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
The endocrine system controls your mood, sleep, hunger,
digestion, emotions, breathing rate and the rate our heart
beats just to name a few.
So how could one system have so much influence?
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Glands are the major
organs of the
Endocrine system.
– Hypothalamus
– Thyroid
– Pancreas
– ovaries/testies
– Pituitary gland
– Parathyroid
– Thymus
– Adrenal Glands
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
• The functions of the
Endocrine system
are regulating your
mood, growth and
development, tissue
function, and
metabolism, as well
as sexual function
and reproductive
processes.

Integumentary System
$5 Integument…..aka….”Cover”
Integumentary System
The integumentary system
is composed of the
1. skin
2. nails
3. glands
Function of skin:
1. Provide protection
2. Regulate body
temperature
3. Sensory
Skin has 3 layers:
1.
2.
3.
Epidermis – nails and hair
Dermis – blood vessels, nerves,
glands, smooth muscle, and hair
Hypodermis – fat
Epidermis
Epidermis
1st Layer Epidermis
• Contains KERATIN – protein
that forms hair, nails, calluses
• Contains MELANIN – gives
skin color
Epidermis
2ND Layer Dermis
• Contains blood vessels, nerves, glands,
smooth muscle, and hair
• Contains 2 types of glands:
1. Sweat – produces sweat
2. Sebaceous – produces oil
3rd Layer Hypodermis or Subcutaneous
Contains layer of fat and
connective tissue;
provides insulation
Dermis
Fat
Subcutaneous
Epidermis
First Degree Burn – Only the superficial
epidermis is burned and is painful,
but is not blistered.
Second Degree Burn - Deeper layers of
epidermis are effected, could have inflammation,
blisters, and the burned skin is often painful.
Caused by hot glue
Third Degree Burn- The entire epidermis is charred or
burned away, and the burn may extend into the dermis.
Often such a burn is not painful at first because the
sensory receptors in the dermis may have been
destroyed.
Extensive third degree burnPotentially life threatening because of loss
of skin, without this natural barrier, skin is
exposed to the environment and is
susceptible to infection and dehydration.
Skin Graft
- A skin graft is a surgical
procedure in which a piece of
skin is transplanted from one
area to another. Often skin will be
taken from unaffected areas on
the injured person and used to
cover a defect, often a burn.
Taking the graft from the injured
person makes rejection of the
tissue unlikely.
Quick Question?
If you are sweating
on a hot day, which
system is your body
using to cool itself
off?

Muscular System
• 3 types of muscle tissue
–Skeletal muscle
–Smooth muscle

Responsible
for movement
Involuntary
Cardiac
Responsible
for pumping

Smooth
Responsible for
constricting blood
vessels, GI tract, &
other areas of body
Types of Muscle
most common job of the smooth
muscle is to squeeze.
•The
•Smooth
muscle is involuntary, contains a
single nucleus, and lacks striations.
Types of Muscle
• Pumps our blood
• Involuntary
• Contains striations and a single
nucleus per cell.
Types of Muscle
• Attached to and moves your bones.
• Main job is for movement.
• Voluntary, multi-nucleate, & striated

Appendicular
Skeleton
which contains
Arms/legs
Shoulders
Pelvis
Spongy bone

bones come together
1. Ball & socket
• Greatest range of motion
• Shoulder, hip
