Behavioral Therapy
 Behavior therapy has its roots in animal
learning models of over a hundred years
ago in the work of Pavlov and Thorndike.
 Classical Condition involves forming
associations between stimuli using some
techniques such as; flooding, systematic
desensitization, aversion therapy
 Operant conditioning focuses on how
reinforcement and punishment can be
utilized to either increase or decrease the
frequency of behavior such as,
contingency management, modeling,
extinction
Behavior T herapy
Need to know
1) Phobias, panic disorders, and OCD are some of the conditions this type of
therapy is used to treat
2) Focuses on changing ineffective behavior patterns
3) Focuses on consequences of actions rather than peer pressure
4) Positive reinforcement is used to strengthen desired behaviors such as praising
or giving a treat for a positive or desired behavior
5) Negative reinforcement is used to decrease and eliminate undesired behaviors
such as ignoring negative behaviors or removing privileges or desired items for
negative behavior
Group Therapy
1) 2 or more people working in a group with 1 or more therapists, to develop
social interaction or share a common goal or outcome
2) Groups can be educational, supportive, or self help related
3) Groups can be open; meaning anyone can participate or closed; meaning only
selected individuals may participate
4) Groups should have rules, a set structure and a set tone
5) Depression and Traumatic stress disorders are treated well with group therapy.

behaviors

are part of something and not alone
4) They allow for an opportunity for
feedback from the group
5) They prove alternate ways of dealing
with of looking at problems
Evidence Based Practice
