The Northern Abolitionist
Abolitionist opposed
slavery

Douglass was a key
leader in the
abolishment of
slavery.
The Northern states
became “free states”.
Fugitive Slave Act
In 1850 the Fugitive
Slave Act was passed
as part of the
Compromise of 1850.
This forced any
official who didn’t
arrest a run-away
slave liable to pay a
fine.
Well…
The compromise of
1850 was a
compromise made
to decide weather
or not slavery
would be allowed in
the new southern
states.
Bleeding Kansas
During and before
the war, Kansas
was a borderland
between the Union
and the
Confederacy.
Kansas was seen
as the front of the
war.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act served to appeal the Missouri Compromise.
It allowed the people of Kansas and Nebraska to
decide for themselves if they wanted slave or not.
Mexican/American War
1846
United States chose
to go into northern
Mexico as an attempt
to win land.
Controversial because
Americans claimed an
unofficial border, that
Mexicans crossed.
Truce Made
• Mexico and USA made peace, after suffering
thousands casualties.
• USA gains Land North of Rio Grande
• Santa Anna was banished
• USA eventually pays $15,000,000 to Mexico for
the land

case against the
government even
though he was held
as a slave in a free
state.

Opposed to Slavery
South Carolina and 6
other states seceded
from the union, form
confederacy.

of Slavery.
