- the United States expanded westwards
- colonization of the whole American continent from the

-In 1846 the American entered Oregon Territory and the

California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico)

THE REASON OF THE WAR
- The existence of two antagonistic economic and social
system in the United States:
1) The North
-the capitalist (develop freely and expand rapidly) system in
the North, the Northerners wanted all territorial expansion of
the U.S. to be free
2) The South
-Slave system in the South (a specific form of American
feudalism), The Southerners wanted to introduce slavery into
all new territories

ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND POLITICS
-In 1854 the Northern capitalists founded a new political
party – the Republican Party rallied all anti-slavery and
progressive forces in the North
-1860 – the elections – the Republican
Party´s candidate: Abraham Lincoln,
they won the election, and Abraham
Lincoln became president.

-Before Abraham Lincoln took office, 11 Southern states
seceded from the Union and formed:

- President of the Southern Confederacy – Jefferson Davis

-Fort Sumter in Carolina was attacked by Confederate forces
and so the Civil War broke out

war supplies

foreign imports

PROCLAMATION
-Lincoln himself hesitated to
abolish slavery. It was after
one and half year he issued
The Emancipation
Proclamation – all slaves in
United States shall be free
-It changed the war – it had
now revolutionary basis

-A military turning point of the war was Lee´s (general of
Confederacy) defeat at Gettysburg in 1863
-In 1864 Lincoln found a general of Union - Grant

The end of the Civil War
-1st April 1865 – Northern troops captured
Richmond – capital of Southern Confederacy
-9th April 1865– General Lee surrendered to
General Grant – the end of the War
-The Civil War cost 215,000 lives
-14th April 1865– Lincoln was assassinated by
the agent of the South – actor Booth during the
performance at Ford´s Theatre in Washington –
they celebrated the Northern victory (it was 5
days after the end of the war)
