What did the Emancipation Proclamation
do?
• Statement to free ALL slaves in
CONFEDERATE states.

stronger than the South?
• Diverse economy – industry, farms, trade
with Europe
• Bigger population - more people to do the
work at home while soldiers fought in the
fields
• Train tracks helped move supplies and
soldiers
• Mostly weren’t fighting on their territory so
it wasn’t crushed in war.
What advantages did the North
have in their military strategy?
• More people to fight
• Anaconda plan – to surround and crush
• Naval blockade – to block supplies and money
from the South

its significance to the Civil War?
• the right of someone to appear before
a judge to determine if he is being
imprisoned lawfully.

those states from seceding
What were some of the things that
soldiers did when they were NOT at
battle?
• they were at camp 50 days to every 1
day in battle. They occupied their time
playing games, writing letters, singing,
acting, hunting, fishing, playing sports,
reading…etc
What were conditions like in camp
for the soldiers?
• The camps were dirty and they had
poor hygiene. Tents were pitched next
to latrines, bathed in their drinking
water. This spread disease often.
What was the significance of the
battles of Antietam and Gettysburg?
•
Antietam and Gettysburg were the
only two attempts of the Confederate
Army to attack the North, rather than
play defense. They were unsuccessful
at both attempts and lost 1/3 of their
army. After Gettysburg they only
fought a defensive war.
