What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
* The Emancipation Proclamation was a decree carried
on by Abraham Lincoln that stated that all African
American slaves living within the confederate states
would be granted their freedom unless the states
declared their loyalty to the union.
What happened on September in
the year of 1862?

In September of 1862 Lincoln issue a preliminary
decree that stated that unless the rebellious states
returned to the union before January 1st, freedom
would be granted to the slaves within those states.
How many confederate states took
the offer? What happened?
None of the confederate states took the offer and on
January 1st just like he promised the Emancipation
Proclamation took place.
Did the Emancipation
Proclamation free all the slaves?
No, the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all
the slaves. It only freed the slaves living within the
rebellious states or also known as the confederate
states.
How did the freed slaves react?
The freed slaves took action right away and most of
them migrated to the Union states to join the Union
army and fight for the freedom of the free.
Why did Lincoln free the slaves living
within the Confederate states but not the
slaves living within the Union states?
Lincoln freed the slaves from the Confederate states
because they were rebelling against the Union and he
knew that liberating the slaves would cause them major
harm. However, he did not free the slaves from the
Union because he feared he would loose the loyalty of
the people.
Time Period
1860-1863
The Emancipation Proclamation took place when
Abraham Lincoln was president (1860). During this
time slavery was popular amongst the people and the
nation was divided into two groups. The confederates
and the union.
Lincoln was against slavery and he believed the slaves
should be freed.
After the Unions victory in Antietam, in the year of
1862, Lincoln decided to issue a preliminary decree.

The Emancipation was a document that Abraham
Lincoln created to help free the slaves.
The Emancipation was made public on September in
the year of 1862.
This decree stated that unless the confederate states
surrendered to the Union, every slave within those
states would be granted their freedom.

What happened?
Abraham Lincoln was a man that did not support
slavery and believed that slavery was a bad thing and he
wanted to find a solution to abolish it without
upsetting his followers.
He saw his opportunity during the Civil War.
He then issued a mandate stating that if the rebellious
states did not return to the Union, all slaves living
within them would be granted their freedom.
How did he affect the African
American people at the time?
Abraham Lincoln Lincoln affected the African
American people because he started a movement that
would end up being the start to a revolution that
would change millions of lives for the better.
He granted hundreds and thousands of African
Americans their freedom.
Not only that but he granted them the opportunity to
fight for the Union.
Which became a remarkable opportunity and
significant movement.

because it was a mandate that freed the slaves living

This document was the beginning to a movement that
would eventually bring all the African Americans their
freedom and the equality they sought and deserved.
