States Added to the Union
• Florida, the 27th state, in 1845
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida
Texas, the 28th State, added under…
• Many sources say that Texas was annexed during Tyler’s time
in office. However, Texas was annexed on December 29, 1845,
months after Tyler left office. Based on this information, it can
be assumed that Tyler was a strong advocate for the
annexation of Texas, but this was not achieved until Polk took
over office after Tyler.

Important Terms
• Tyler vetoed a banking bill proposed by Whig members of
Congress, leading his Whig Cabinet members to resign (with
the exception of Daniel Webster.) This ultimately led to his
expulsion from the Whig party. (1841)

• Independent Treasury System Repealed (1841): Only one year
after its creation, the Independent Treasury Act was repealed.
The Whig party repealed it hoping to create a new central
bank. Tyler, however objected the new creation because it
was unconstitutional. http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/history/A0858776.html
• Brook Farm Established (1841): This farm was created under
the transcendentalists. They believed that physical labour was
essential for mental wellbeing and health. The main purpose
was to allow everyone to have an equal chance for spiritual,
economic and intellectual growth. It allowed for almost
complete equality between people, which was a founding
idea of the country. http://www.vcu.edu/engweb/transcendentalism/ideas/brhistory.html
• Oregon Fever (1841): Americans wanted to settle in Oregon
because of how beautiful and rich the land was. Huge
numbers of people travelled on the Oregon Trail. Most settlers
were antislavery, which would support antislavery causes (as
well as the Civil War) in the future.

Slave Mutiny on the Creole: 134 slaves on the Creole
rebelled and sailed the ship to the British port of Nassua. The
British refused to hand over the slaves and ships to America
because slavery was outlawed by the British. It was an
example of foreign opinion and laws effecting the US. (1841)

The Webster-Ashburton Treaty: Settled a land dispute between
the US and Britain over boundaries between the Northern states
and Canada. The US gained some land because of the treaty. The
land defines our northeastern border with Canada. (1842)
