.
The Problem
• Technical: ease of data access
• Managerial: information black box.
• Complexity (of data, of decisions)
The Status Quo
Silos of Capability
• GIS Tools don’t query databases well.
• Database query tools don’t handle spatial objects
well
• Lots of interchange between GIS and DBs to get a
simple answer
• Every BUSINESS problem becomes a
TECHNICAL problem
Our Approach
• Focus on the Query System.
– Ease of Use by Non-Technical folks
– Cost Effective (Use Open Source)
– Low Maintenance
• Various Prototypes
• Work with others
• Go back to the beginning…
What Are Our Components
• Query Tool: LifeLine
• Spatial Database: PostGIS
• Mapping System: MapServer
• The task is “gluing” these together
Defining A Query
.
View and Summarize Data
.
View A Map (and another Map)
.
…. And Another Map …. And More Data … and …
.
More Complex Spatial Queries (Prototype Mode!)
… harnessing the power of PostGIS
.
To Do List
•
•
•
•
•
Complete Redesign – in Python
Adding full suite of spatial operators
Automated colour theming
Accessing Multi-databases
Advanced database schemas (“Tree” to “Forest”
Graphs)
• Analysis capabilities – exploratory data analysis
Going Forward
• A framework that works today
• It needs to be made simpler, more automated,
easier to install and setup
• Join us!
• What else can be “glued” together ???
Going Open Source
• Open Source version of current LifeLine to be
released as “Xaya” under a BSD/MIT style
license.
• Then we will rebuild it!
• Help us design Xaya from the beginning!
