Slavery
-Slavery had long been an issue in the
United States since the Revolutionary war
-Slavery had been the main reason why
the South and the North came to a Civil
War
- Slaves made farmers free workers to
pick items such as cotton and tobacco
Important Terms
Abolitionist- Someone who fought for the freedom of slaves, these people were
usually found in the north
Secession- This was when a state said they didn’t want to be a part of the rest of
the United States
Free State- A state that didn’t allow slaves and when the Civil War started sided
with the Union
Slave State- A state that allowed slavery, found in the south
Mason Dixon Line- All states south of Pennsylvania became slave states while all
states north of Maryland became free states
Acts and Compromises
- Compromises such as the 3/5 compromise were used to count the
number of slaves in a state or a territory ( area of land which hadn’t
applied for statehood yet)
-Compromise of 1820- Missouri wanted to enter the Union as a slave
state but this angered the North (who was against slavery) because
there would be one less free state than slave state, so Maine entered
the Union as a free state to keep the balance of power in Congress
-Fugitive Slave Act- If a slave was found in the North and was found
he was ordered that runaway slaves to be returned
Compromise of 1850- California achieved statehood as a free state
