Romanticism, Realism,
Impressionism
CHAPTER 24, SECTION 4
Romanticism
Showed deep interest both in nature and in the
thoughts and feelings of the individual; they turned
from reason to emotion, from society to nature
Realism
Tried to show life how it is, not how it should be;
reflected the political importance of the working
class in the 1850s and the struggles they were
undergoing
Impressionism
Instead of showing life as it really is, they tried giving
their impression of a subject or a moment of time;
used pure, shimmering colors to capture a moment
seen in a glance

What to Do:
1. Title and Group Members
2. Biography of your person
3. Pick 2 works by your person and be able to EXPLAIN how
they fit into the romantic, realist, impressionist, or
nationalist music era. If you have an author/poet, you
must find an excerpt from your person and explain it to
the class. If you have a musical composer, you must play a
clip and explain why it is considered nationalistic. If you
have an artist, you must find two works of art (no nudity)
and explain how they fit into the appropriate category.
