What is culture?
“Culture is a set of basic assumptions
that defines what we pay attention to,
what things mean, how to react to what
is going on, and what actions to take in
various situations.”
Edgar Schein
What is culture?
Culture is the values and perspectives
shared by people who are “conditioned by
similar education and life experience”




Regional: country, area, community
Religion: sects, variations, etc...
Corporate: industry, company, department
Other groups: schools, clubs, etc...
The power of culture
• Human beings are creatures of habit
Our brains are not abstract reasoning machines
We tend to economize on thought…
We go with the flow…
• Human beings are social animals
We do not single-mindedly pursue self-interest
We have a strong need to belong…
So we tend to conform… to “fit in”

What is organizational culture?
Is there an engineering culture?
Is construction a different culture?
Other professions: legal, environmental, business,
accounting, politics
• Does culture affect work performance?
• Can you use culture to accomplish a task?
• Do leadership styles differ by/for cultures?
Complexity of culture
 Culture is implicit and therefore not evident.
 People think their culture is natural and correct
 People think alternative ways are odd and wrong
 People do not see cultural contrasts until sensitized

Cultural impact on teams…
• Perception of the team’s objectives
• The way members communicate
• How they view leadership
• Work habits
• Interacting with the opposite sex
• The formality with team members
• Willingness to socialize
Working with other cultures…
• Don’t assume differences are odd or unproductive
• Listen and observe… before you act
• Be curious: read about other cultures or talk to other
people from that culture
• Try to discuss differences, but be respectful if other
team members are not comfortable discussing them
• Provide feedback that is “I” centered, not “you”
critical
Points to Remember…
• Culture shapes meaning & behavior
• Professional culture is determined by
training, experience & social factors
• Differing professions have differing cultures
• Differing cultures view success differently
• Your culture is not the only correct one!
