Preparing for an
Occupation
What is Work/Occupation
all about?
According to the textbook:
Work is an economic necessity for those
who want to become independent, but it
allows individuals to pursue their dreams
 According to Anderson and Hayes (1996
study): 88% of women and 91% of men
identified work as a major contributor to
their self-esteem

How can an occupation
choice affect your self
esteem?
Throughout history, people
were not required to choose
an occupation – they simply
followed in their parents’
footsteps
-the knowledge and skills
were learned throughout
childhood
The
th
20
century
Has brought significant changes and
availability of choices – work is separated
from home
 Technology etc has brought us to the
point of having so many different choices
– parents can no longer ‘train’ their
children

Role of the Family?
The family now provides ‘inherited’
intellectual potential and the social and
cultural attitudes and skills that enable
their children to succeed
 School and the community provide
opportunities for anticipatory socialization
 Society determines the job opportunities
