Equality and Diversity
This workshop will provide you with an opportunity to
explore and discuss in an informal but structured manner
how your own attitudes, behaviour and use of language
can effect colleagues and the wider community
Objectives
By the end of the day you will:
•
Understand which groups in society are most vulnerable to
stereotyping, and how this can lead to prejudice and
discrimination.
•
Have an awareness of current legislation supporting equality
and diversity in the workplace.
•
Positive measures to address under-representation in the
workplace.
•
Identify the impact of bullying and harassment in the workplace.
Equality and Diversity
• Equality – valuing all individuals and offering them the
same opportunity to reach their potential in employment,
or to access a service
• Diversity – difference; recognising that individuals do
have differences and seeing the value in those
differences
• Society consists of many diverse individuals and groups,
and the diversity of our communities is an asset to the
borough
• We have a moral and legal responsibility to promote
equal opportunities
• Not only for staff but for clients/customers who
participate or are involved in activities
Equality Act 2010
Came into force on 1st October 2010.
The Act is a framework of protection for people discriminated against
because they are perceived to have, or are associated with someone
who has, a protected characteristic. What characteristics are protected?

Offensive songs, remarks, jokes, emails or gestures
