Canola Oil Background
•Until the late 1960’s rapeseed oil was Canada's main oil
•Erucic Acid concerns were raised
•As a result traditional breeding techniques to develop
superior strains of rapeseed plants that had reduced levels of
erucic acid & other non-nutritive components
•In the late 1970’s canola was developed to distinguish the
new plant from rapeseed
•In 1985 canola oil was granted GRAS, generally regarded as
safe, status

Canola Oil Health Benefits
•Contains Vitamin E, Oleic acid, and Alpha-linolenic Acid
•These are all shown to decrease blood cholesterol, lower
LDL-cholesterol and protect against heart attacks
•Good source of Vitamin E
•Alpha-tocopherol is the main active molecule of Vitamin E
•One tablespoon of canola oil provides about 25% of the
RDA for alpha-tocopherol
•Vitamin E is an antioxidant in preventing oxidative
damage within cell membranes
