Section 2 Living Things
A.
How are living things or organisms alike?
1. Living things are organized.
a. Cell – the smallest unit of an organism that carries on the
functions of life.
b. Each cell has an orderly structure and contains hereditary
material.
Example: Muscle cells need to be worked hard to win at a sport.
Living Things respond
Stimulus – anything that causes some change in
an organism.
– Example: Sun giving energy to a plant.
Response – the way an organism reacts to a
stimulus, often results in movement
– Example: A plant leaning towards the Sun
Homeostasis – maintaining the proper conditions
inside an organism.
- Example: A normal body temperature of 98.6 degrees
Living things use energy
Example: Food gives
humans energy
Living things grow and develop
– Growth of many – celled organisms is due to an
increase in the number of cells.
• Example: Growing 4 inches over the summer
– Growth of one – celled organisms is due to an increase
in size of the cell.
– Development – changes that take place during the life
of an organism
• Example: A puppy is less clumsy after one year
– Living things reproduce
• Example: A cat having kittens
What do living things need?
• A place to live that provides for all of the
organism’s needs.
• Raw materials like water, proteins, fats,
and sugars
