What was the Catholic
Reformation?
The Catholic Church’s response to the
Protestant Reformation. It was an attempt
to clean up the image of the Church and
increase its’ influence around the globe.
How did the Catholic Reformation
work?
The Catholics had 2 strategies:
■ Stop the spread of
Protestantism
■ Reform the Church from within
Water Torture during the Inquisition
How did the Catholic Church reform
itself from within?
■ The Council of Trent was brought
together to decide on Church reforms.
■ New religious orders were created to
focus on charity & good works.
■ Showed the Catholics’ belief that one
needs more than just faith to be saved:
■ Living among the poor and sick
■ Strengthening rural parishes
■ Encouraging pious and simple living
How did the Catholic Church stop
the spread of Protestantism?
■ The Church kept to its strict
teachings. It was very
intolerant of different ways
of thinking.
■ The Church also reasserted
its authority in the following
ways:
■ The Jesuits
■ The Inquisition
Who were the Jesuits?
The Society of Jesus - 1540
■
Founded by Ignatius Loyola
■
Promoted education
■
Famous for missionary work
■
Worked to gain political
influence
-Went against Protestants by
mixing political & religious
power.
What was the Inquisition?
1400s-1800’s
■ Goals:
▪ find & punish heretics
▪ enforce Catholic beliefs
▪ show Church’s power
■ Spain and Italy mostly
■ The accused (mostly Jews &
Muslim) were put on trial, seen
as guilty first.
■ Use of brutal torture to force
confessions.
For centuries, three
religions lived and
worked together in
Spain. In 1492, Queen
Isabella and King
Ferdinand married
and unified the country.
It was Catholic only.
Spanish Inquisition hunted down and
punished any Jews or
Muslims in Spain. They
were forced to convert,
leave Spain, or be
severely punished.
Priests were
ruthless in carrying out
this duty. Even if
Muslims or Jews
converted, they were
punished if they were
suspected of keeping
their old beliefs.
The Inquisition began to
punish Christians as
well. They punished all
Muslims, Jews, and
Protestants. The
Catholic Church had no
opposition in Spain and
became very strong.
Was the Catholic Reformation
a success?
The Church did not win back many of the “lost souls”
that had converted to Protestantism…
But, it got rid of its reputation for corruption and it
spread widely because of missionary work.
