HUMAN EAR-parts & functions
1. Pinna: collects sound waves
3. Ear Canal: tube directs (funnels) sound waves to the
eardrum
4. Eardrum: vibrating membrane that converts sound
energy into mechanical energy (moving parts)
5,6,7. Hammer, Anvil, Stirrup Bones: amplifies sound
(moving parts)
9. Semicircular canals: maintains balance
10. Cochlea: converts mechanical energy into electrical
energy signal
11. Auditory Nerve: cable that sends electrical signal to
brain
12. Eustachian Tube: flex eardrum by air pressure;
“airplane experience”; drains middle ear.
Causes of hearing loss
1] Aging (most common)
2] Injury
3] Infection
4] Exposure to loud sounds
(hearing loss: 120 decibels or higher)
