Senses
Vision
Retina: Contains receptor cells that
respond to light.
Receptors ---- photoreceptors
Rods
--- Functions with very little light;
can’t detect color (night vision).
Cones --- Distinguishes color; requires
bright light.
Hearing & Balance
Cochlea --- the organ of the inner ear that
contains the mechanoreceptors for
hearing.
Sound waves enter outer ear, travels to
eardrum and vibrates membrane, the
vibrations enter middle ear, vibrations
cause cochlea fluid to move like a wave,
hairs move and cause impulses, impulses
are interpreted as sound.
Taste & Smell
Both rely on chemo receptors --- respond
to specific kinds of chemicals & sends
impulses to brain through sensory nerves.
4 primary tastes --- bitter, salty, sour, and
sweet.
