What is hearing loss?
 Something isn’t working with one or more parts of the
ear and/or auditory pathway
 Info from 2009-2010 (Gallaudet compiles census-like
information on the DHH population)
 2068 students in PA with diagnosed HL
 Low Incidence
 Heterogenous
Heterogeneous
 Today, there is not a perfect example of a DHH child
 40% of people within the DHH population has one or
more concomitant disorders
Developmental Disability
 Chronic conditions occurring during the first twenty-one
years of life that limit an individual’s development in
physical, learning, or behavioral domains

Disabilities
• Muscular Dystrophy
• Vision Impairment
DeafBlindness
 Any combined hearing and vision loss that significantly
limits children’s ability to get information from people
and objects around them.
 ~90% of children with D/B have one or more additional
disabilities
 Early ID – if one sensory impairment is identified,
others should be evaluated. Do not Wait & See!

Deafness & ID
 There is a greater percentage of people with hearing
loss and concomitant intellectual disability than the
general population.
 Your classrooms – how many receive yearly hearing
screens?
 Follow-up services need to occur ASAP after problem
identification
 Caregiver/Professional education
Deafness & Autism
 Jure et al. (1991) studies the prevalence of autism
among DHH children. In the study, 4% met the criteria
for Autism.
Clinical Implications
 Specialized teams
 When in doubt, refer out
 Maintain knowledge of functional auditory knowledge
