DEAFNESS
Deafness is a generic term which covers
a wide range of hearing loss
Deaf with a capital D denotes people
who regard themselves as part of a
linguistic cultural minority group. (Deaf
people).
deafness with a lower case d is used
when describing hearing loss in general.
Hard of Hearing denotes people with an
acquired hearing loss.
THEORY
Social Model of Disability (Oliver 1990)
Loss
Disengagement Theory
THEORY
‘Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs.’
However, contrary to Maslow’s
theory, the Deaf community
formed as a result of an oppressive
society, having achieved a strong
sense of ‘belonging’ despite the
fact that lower level needs may not
have been met.
