Sweden's capital city
The first thing you notice about Stockholm,
Sweden's capital, is its extraordinary shape - the
country's largest city spread over islands and
around inlets. Then there's the Old Town (Gamla
Stan) that appears medieval with its 16th and
17th Century buildings and cobbled streets. The
original Gamla Stan was known as the "City
between the bridges."

The population of

National language
National language
The primary language of Sweden is Swedish, a North
Germanic language, related and very similar to Danish and
Norwegian, but differing in pronunciation and orthography.
Although Swedish is the dominant language, it is not an
official language. Sweden Finns are Sweden's largest
linguistic minority, comprising about 3 percent of Sweden's
population and Finnish is recognised as a minority
language. Four other minority languages are also
recognised (Meänkieli, Sami, Romani and Yiddish).

climate
Sweden's weather has many faces.
Sweden enjoys a mostly temperate
climate despite its northern latitude,
mainly because of the Gulf Stream.
Stockholm is warmer and milder, while in
the mountains of northern Sweden a subArctic climate predominates.
North of the Arctic Circle, the sun never
sets for part of each summer, which is
called the Midnight Sun, one of
Scandinavia's natural phenomena. The
opposite occurs in the winter, when night
is unending for a corresponding period.
These are the Polar Nights (another one of
Scandinavia's natural phenomena).
Popular food
Sweden's climate and location are largely responsible for the
development of its cuisine. Early inhabitants stocked food supplies to
prepare for the start of the country's long, cold winters by preserving
meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables.
The Vikings, who inhabited all of Scandinavia more than one thousand
years ago, were some of the first to develop a method for preserving
foods. In preparation for long voyages, foods were salted, dehydrated,
and cured. Though modern-day technology (such as the refrigerator
and freezer) has eliminated the need for such preserving methods,
Swedes continue to salt, dehydrate, and cure many of their foods,
particularly fish.
