Propaganda:
The spreading of ideas and information for the
purpose of furthering a cause or goal.
Why a poster?:
• Posters and newspapers were the main way to
communicate with the public – WWI was before the
internet, television, and even radio.
• Poster could be mass produced – thousands of posters
could be printed and posted in every Canadian city is a
short amount of time.
Propaganda usually involves the use of different
literary techniques:
• Biased information
• Distorted facts and Exaggerations
• Emotion

Purpose of Propaganda Posters
There are four main purposes of propaganda
that was used during World War One
Recruitment
Rationing
Paying for the War
Incendiary (explosive!)
What was so effective about WWI
Propaganda Posters?
WWI propaganda posters had a number of
important features:
1. They were colourful and eye-catching.
2. They included a slogan or brief title that
could be read quickly by passers-by.
3. They used one or several of the techniques
already noted to attract viewers.
4. They had a goal, whether it be recruitment or
rationing, etc.
