DO NOW
The motto of the World State is “Community,
Identity, Stability.” What motto might
characterize contemporary American society?
In the World State, one way social control,
and thereby stability, is maintained, is through
propaganda. How does our contemporary
society compare/contrast to the World
State in this respect?

LEARNING FOCUS FOR TODAY
Explore the use of propaganda as a
method of social control looking at
Huxley’s perspective from 1958
versus the 21st Century.
Continue
discussion on
propaganda.
• It is defined as the regulation of individual and group
behavior in an attempt to gain conformity and
compliance to the rules of a given society, state, or
social group.
• All societies have ways to promote order, stability and
predictability in social life. Without social control,
social life would be unpredictable, even chaotic.
• There are two broad types of social control:
– Internal (Informal)
– External (Formal)
• Lie within the individual, and is developed during
socialization. You are practicing internal social
control when you act according to your conscience,
i.e. you do something because it is the right thing to
do.

Group affiliations
• External rules enforced by
government to prevent the
establishment of chaos or
break down of social
bonds.
– Laws
– Law enforcement
– Court system
– Prisons
• Societies reinforce norms and rules through
sanctions (systems of reward and
punishments).
– Positive sanctions (eg. smile of approval, awards, raises)
are used to encourage conformity.
– Negative sanctions (eg. criticism, fines, imprisonment) are
intended to stop socially unacceptable behavior.
• Act of violating a social norm is called
deviance.

Television shows, movies,

of the mass media influence
our political views; our tastes
in popular culture; our views
of women, people of color,
and gays; and many other
beliefs and practices.

The propaganda model seeks to explain the behavior of
news media operating within a capitalist economy. The
model suggests that the mass media often serves as a tool to
manufacture consent, operating on unchallenged premises
that serve the narrow interests of political and economic
elites.
As Noam Chomsky maintains, “Any dictator would admire the
uniformity and obedience of the U.S. media.”
From “Brave New World Revisited”, 1958
The Mike Wallace Interview
with Aldous Huxley
As you read…
• Annotate the text, focusing on ideas
that connect with “social control”
• Huxley’s beliefs about the society in
which he lived (it was 1958 when this
interview took place)
• Places you agree or disagree with
Huxley
• Textual connections
• Connections to today’s society
The Mike Wallace
Interview was a
national television
show that aired from
1957-1960
The Mike Wallace Interview
with Aldous Huxley
1. In the 1958 interview, Huxley describes
the experts of Madison Avenue who
control the advertising of radio and
television. What or who do you think
are the equivalent “Mad Men” of 2015?
2. We see in the interview that Huxley
believes that reaching children is a vital
step to controlling and manipulating the
population. How does he show this in
Brave New World? Do you agree with
him? Why or why not? Use examples
from our contemporary society to support
your reasoning.
