eliminates harsh shadows to
create a bright environment.
•It is generally used to convey an
upbeat, funny or beautiful subject
but can be manipulated to
communicate a number of moods
and concepts.

•High key lighting is used regularly
for model photography, flowers and
other subjects that are relatively
feminine in nature as well as product
photography.
•A product shown on white tends to
suggest that it is high quality or upscale
in nature.
•High key is shot on a white
background or a cyc (cyclorama) wall.

Individual Practice: (15-20 minutes)
1. Locate three examples of high key lighting.
2. Put each image into a Microsoft word document and describe, in
one or two sentences, how each image expresses a feeling of
victory or happiness.
3. Email to Ms. L when complete.

Form a group of no more than four students
b. 15 minutes per set - per group (we need to share)

Group Practice: Shooting a high + low key image
* Groups have a time limit of 15-20 minutes per set
1. Form a group of no more than four individuals.
2. Each person in the group has a specific job;
a. photographer; shoots image(s)
b. photo assistant; takes light readings using a light meter, moves lights on set
c. subject; listens to photographer and follows their instructions
d. digital tech; takes production notes, list of group members, f-stops, shutter speed, etc.
downloads images to google docs and shares with group.
3. Each member of the group will photograph a total of two images;

1 high key lighting (against white)
1 low key lighting (against black).
4. Each group member will rotate jobs within the group so each group
member has the experience of exploring all job.
5. Once shared- students will work on their individual images.

Crop each image, 8X10 at 72 DPI. (Retouch if necessary)
Rename images files; your.name.high.key.jpg –and- your.name.low.key.jpg
Email your final images; subject heading; High and Low lighting practice.
Remember that the digital tech (each student) will need to hand in their technical notes
via email or hardcopy.
