Stalin ends NEP & start his own economic plan – the 5 Year Plans
Stalin wanted rapid industrialization
Quotas were raised for production of steel, oil, coal, & electricity
To meet quotas regular consumer goods were limited
Although the high goals aren’t met, Soviets made huge gains
In 1928 the government took control of all private farms
Farms combined into “collective farms” – producing food for state
People who wouldn’t give up their farms suffered under the Cheka
•Ukrainian kulaks resisted collectivization
•Stalin orders the liquidation of the kulaks
•3 Million were executed or imprisoned –
another 2 million were starved to death
•Up to 10 million soviet citizens were killed
during Stalin’s collectivization plan
