• Lived 1748-1825
• Most famous for portraits of Napoleon and
other French Revolution figures
• Also painted subjects from Ancient Greek and
Roman History
• Specialty: Historical Paintings and (you
guessed it) Propaganda Art.

• About 3 warriors swearing an oath to defend
their city to the death
• Patriotic Propaganda
• The general public saw in the painting, their
own belief that they needed to save their
country from the outlandish spending of the
ruling monarchy (in France).

shock over the death of one of the leaders of
the French Revolution.
• Both are images of men who died horrible
