1. Name Calling
a) Uses negative labels to stigmatize
opponents
b) “My opponent is a card-carrying liberal”
2. Bandwagon
a) Encourages the listener to do something
because it’s the popular thing to do.
b) “More and more of us want new blood in
Washington, and we’re voting for Jones”

3. Testimonial
a) Convinces only through the endorsement of a
respected personality
b) “If he’s okay with General Colin Powell, then
he’s okay with me.”
4. Plain Folks
a) Attempting to come across as the common
person—I’m the same as you
b) “I know what it’s like to not have enough money
to pay my bills.”

5. Glittering Generality
a) Says little specifically, but conveys
emotion.
b) “John Jones has made this nation a
better place!”
6. Transfer
a) Using symbols to get emotion
b) Speaker standing in front of the White
House/American Flag/Capital/etc.

7. Card stacking
a) Presents evidence in a partial or slanted way.
b) “The average income is rising”—technically
correct, but only the top 10% of incomes are up
8. False Cause
a )Insists that one event caused the other just because it came
first
b) “As soon as Jones was elected, savings banks began to fail.”

9. Appeal to Emotion
a) Summons fear, anger, or pity to secure
listener support.
b) “If we don’t fight crime my way, your
child won’t feel safe walking the streets.”
10. False Cause
a) Insists that one event caused the other just
because it came first
b) “As soon as Jones was elected, savings banks
began to fail.”
