Chapter three
Summarise the plot of
chapter two in five
sentences or less
In chapter three, the pigs start to use propaganda to persuade
the animals to keep working and accept that pigs are given milk.
Propaganda is action or writing designed to spread particular ideas or
opinions. It is designed to convince people of the opinions it supports.
Propaganda uses false or distorted information to persuade people to
act or think in a particular way.
What effect would it have on the
audience to be addressed in this
way?
What technique?
"Comrades!" he cried. "You do not imagine, I hope, that we
pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many
of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself.
Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our
health. Milk and apples (this has been proved by Science,
comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the
well-being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. The whole
management and organisation of this farm depend on us. Day
and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for YOUR
sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples. Do you
know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones
would come back! Yes, Jones would come back! Surely,
comrades," cried Squealer almost pleadingly, skipping from
side to side and whisking his tail, "surely there is no one
among you who wants to see Jones come back?"
How does he back up his claim?
How is
he
presenti
ng the
pigs as
here?
What does he
threaten here?
Rhetorical device
Uses an expert or so-called fact
to support claims
Uses counter argument – an
argument that might have been
used against him
Uses rhetorical question
Uses repetition
Uses emotive language
Addresses the audience
Example from speech
Create a propaganda poster for Animal
Farm.
Think about a suitable slogan and how the
illustrations might work to support it.
The aim of the poster is to celebrate the
achievements at Animal Farm as a way of
encouraging the same actions on other
farms. It could do this by detailing the
treatment of animals by humans.
