The Hebrews
• One group of people who lived in the Canaan
were the Hebrews.
• The founder of Hebrew people was Abraham
• Modern Jews trace their heritage through
Abraham’s grandson Jacob (also called Israel)
• Twelve tribes of Israel
Hebrews
• Believed in ONE universal God
• New religion was called Judaism
• Jews didn’t believe that god had human
characteristics or the head or body of an
animal like the gods or goddess of Egypt.
• Saw their God as an invisible but powerful
force or spirit.
• Monotheism: Belief in one God.
Hebrews
• According to the bible ancient Hebrews
migrated to Egypt to escape food shortages
and drought.
• Their leader Moses took them out of Egypt
• Moses presented the Hebrews with the Ten
Commandments.
• Established their capital at Jerusalem
Judaism
• The first 5 books of the old testament are
known as the Torah.
• They include the Hebrew code of laws
• Mosaic Law: named for Moses includes the
ten commandments
Judaism
• The early Hebrews worshiped Yahweh as their
only god.
• Those who sinned against Yahweh would
suffer, and so would other generations.
• Came to believe that people had choice
between good and evil
