How Many Messiahs?
QUIZ
Is Jesus only for Gentiles?
Is Yeshua not for Jews?
Is there another Messiah for
the Jews?
Two bridegrooms?
Why is Messiah tarrying?
Is Messiah only human?
Is there a Messiah for each
generation?
Then how many bridegrooms?
Where Did Israel Go Wrong?
“I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those
sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children
together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you
were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate.”
Matthew 23:36-38
“If you had only known on this day, even you, the things that make
for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes … They will
demolish you – you and your children within your walls – and they
will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because
you did not recognize the time of your visitation from G-D.”
Luke 19:42,44
Is the Bridegroom’s Grief
Longsuffering or Condemnation?
Yeshua said,
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
Luke 23:34
“All The Prophets”
Yeshua
“O foolish ones, and slow of heart to
believe all that the prophets have
spoken! … And beginning at
Moses and all the prophets, He
expounded to them in all the
Scriptures the things concerning
Himself. This is what I spoke to you
… that all things must be fulfilled
which were written in the Law of
Moses and the prophets and the
Psalms concerning me.” Luke
24:25-27; 44-46
“There is one who accuses youMoses, in whom you trust. For if
you believed Moses, you would
believe me, for he wrote about
me.” John 5:45-47
Great Expectations
Look both ways before you cross
the street…
Do some have a better radar
than others into the future?
Check ahead before you jump!
Ready to jump into the future?
Don’t be like the cow and follow
every dolphin that comes
around, crying Messiah!
If you want to travel the waters
of messianic prophecy, you need
the Spirit of Messiah in you to
recognize Him when He comes.
Godly Jealousy: The 2 Signs
Israel provokes G-D
Dt 29:14-21; Dt 32:21
Ezekiel 23:25
Rom 10:18ff
Israel was given the sign
of Jonah
Gentiles provoke G-D
Ezekiel 36:5-6
Zeph 1:18
2 Cor 11:2
The Gentiles were given
the sign of Israel
Provoking Them To Jealousy
Sign of Jonah
The reluctance of Jonah to preach
repentance among Gentiles is
compounded by the reluctance of
Judeans to accept repentance in
their home turf even after his
resurrection on the 3rd day.
For as Jonah was a sign to the
Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man
be to this generation. The Queen of
the South will rise at the judgment
with the men of this generation and
condemn them; for she came from
the ends of the earth to listen to
Solomon's wisdom, and now one
greater than Solomon is here. The
men of Nineveh will stand up with
this generation at the judgment and
condemn it, because they repented
at the preaching of Jonah; and
behold, something greater than
Jonah is here. Luke 11:29-32
For just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS
AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY
OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the
Son of Man be three days and three
nights in the heart of the earth.
Matt 12:40
Jonah, the “beloved” learned G-D’s mercy to idolaters did not diminish His love for Israel
Jewish Eschatology
Birthpangs of Messiah:10 signs
Coming of Elijah
War of Gog & Magog
Messiah
Comes
Deliverance of Nation Israel
Ingathering of the Exiles
Messianic Age = 40 – 1000 years
Peace, prosperity, justice, universal knowledge of the Lord
Age to Come: Resurrection, cessation
of death, eternal righteousness
Messianic Speculations 1
Priests and Rabbis are still confused about:
Messiah’s nature: human?
Preexistent? Divine?
Messiah’s role: King? Priest?
Servant?
Messiah Ben Judah (the King)
Messiah Ben Joseph (Suffering
Messiah)
Messiah Ben Levi (the Priest)
Testament of Twelve, Testament of Reuben 6:7-12
“There is one thing between Paul and Akiva: Damascus, the inner breakdown,
and seeing G-D’s grace which appeared in Jesus, turning values upside down,
redirecting thinking to the inside. Damascus is G-D’s mercy.”
Abram Poljak, 1936
Messianic Speculations 2
Manner of Messiah’s Coming
Zec 9:9
If Israel is worthy, He will come
“victoriously on clouds”
If unworthy, He will come
“humbly on a donkey”
Messiah’s delay:
2000 yrs waste + 2000 yrs Torah + 2000 yrs Messiah
He didn’t come 2000 years ago because Israel was unworthy
Orthodox: “If all Jews observe 2 shabbats in a row
faithfully…, He will come!”
Because the Lord says he will tarry for our sake in Isaiah
30:18, the Talmud comments, “Though he tarry, I will wait
for Him!”
“Faith means to leave the deed to G-D. Faith means allowing G-D to lead. Faith means to be
an instrument in the Almighty’s hand. If we want to ‘do’ spiritual things, we will soon be on
the wrong path. G-D alone knows what things are to be done in the kingdom of heaven.
What he wants of us he shows us only step by step. Faith is waiting for his signs and
submitting to his guidance.” Abram Poljak, 1936
I don't think evangelizing the Jewish people is anti-Semitic at all," said Darrell Bock, Jewish
professor at Dallas Theological Seminary. "I view it as pro-Semitic. We are just asking the
Jewish people to consider that Jesus might, in fact, be the Messiah they are looking for."
Biblical Judaism or Rabbinic Judaism?
Closure of Torah, 450 BC
No single law code for 700
years
Mishnah: practical law code of
diaspora Jews 200 AD
Talmud=commentary of
mishnah
Hebrew changed (Mishnaic)
Aggadic stories dismiss G-D
from rabbinic debates
Scripture not cited as authority
“Torah not in heaven” but in
possession of sages
“Logic compels even heaven,
that is G-D, to adopt the sages
position”
“The rabbi – a holy man sanctified
by his knowledge of the Torah that
God gave to Moses at Sinai –
speaks through the Talmud” Jacob
Neusner. Talmud. 2006. 1.
Temple Hopes Shattered
Titus 70 AD Ben Zakkai &
Vespasian
Bar Kokhbah & Hadrian 132 AD
Julian the Apostate 360-361 AD
Judeo-Persian coalition in 614 AD
7th-8th century Saracens invasion of
Palestine to reconquer Jerusalem
only succeeded in wetting Muslim
appetites for the Holy Land
Dome of the Rock 630 AD
How can you have faith when you receive honor from one another
instead of the honor that comes only from G-D? John 5:44
Rabbinic Authority?
There is one Rabbi, Yeshua Rabbeinu
There is One law, the Law of Meshiach
There is one Torah = Torah written on the : not Written law + Oral Law
Sanhedrin, the Beit Din & the Execution of Justice: Holy Spirit drives legal process?
Priests, Scribes & Pharisees were imperfect stewards of the Law Mt 23:2-10
Zeal not from G-D seeks to establish its own righteousness Rom 10:2-4; Rom 9:31-32
Yeshua’s rulings offended Zealot Pharisees & Sadducees Mt 15:2-3; Mk 7:3-13
Yeshua’s justice was based on G-D’s words & deeds, not on a legal system Jn 8:28; 10:25; 12:49
Spirit of Messiah writes the Law on the human : not on organizations
Moses & the prophets wrote down the instruction they received from God (Torah)
Judgments (mishpatim), statutes (chukkot) were case by case applications of the law (halachah)
Talmudic stories & legends (aggadah)= Comments & spins on Torah by rabbis written after Messiah
By fulfilling Torah, Messiah proves Torah cannot contradict itself & becomes final authority (Torah)
Messiah’s words are Spirit & truth, i.e. with power to convict and transform the of man
Rabbinic rulings are mere words if written Torah is “abolished” for the sake of oral tradition
Keys of the kingdom given to Apostles: Apostolic Testimony, not oral tradition is binding (OT+NT)
Judging rightly is impossible without the Spirit of Messiah Yeshua
The Knesset & Beit-Knesset (synagogue): Is theocracy possible without Messiah?
The “Rabbi” is not the “head” of the Messianic synagogue: only Messiah is.
Elders (Z’kenim) like the apostles (schlichim) are the “feet” of the Messianic synagogue.
If the feet are clean, the whole body is clean John 13:9-10
But Messiah is a Son over His own house, Whose house we are… MJ 3:6
Judaism, the Cult of “Jewishness” ?
Having missed Messiah’s identity, Judaism has become centered around Jewishness
Jewish identity is a gift of G-D
The living word thrives on creative worship, is not dependent on repetitive prayer or dry liturgy
Messiah IS the way and the life of the kehilah (His talk and His walk match exactly)
Level of intimacy determines our derech/halachah (how closely we walk with Messiah)
Thus Torah is not subject to human debate to produce halachah (community rule)
Apostles spiritually discerned what G-D was doing in kehilah by recalling Messiah’s word & life
Jewish debates, liturgy, and traditions are not “bad” habits, but they can become idols!
Meshiach haTorah indwells us by His Spirit = writing law on (truth sets free, not law)
We do not worship obedience or the law itself, but the One who establishes us in it
Messianic Judaism aims primarily to restore the Bride’s living faith in Her Messiah
Excessive focus on “Torah observance” can become legalistic self-righteousness
“Jew” → Yehudah = “one who praises”
Messianic Jews center on G-D’s identity revealed through His Messiah rather than
external marks of their own identity in Messiah
Without Hashem, our Abba and His Messiah, we are nothing
Jewish identity = One who praises Adonai
Should our survival mentality in exile rule over living faith?
The vain imaginations of men (kabalah) cannot supersede the gift of G-D’s self-revelation
Excessive focus on Jewish identity raises the Jew & Gentile partition in spiritual matters
Holy Spirit tells us our Jewish Messiah abolished this partition by His death and resurrection
The Messianic Jewish kehilah longs for the regrafting of the original branch to its own
olive root, yet rejoices in the blessing of many Gentiles among them!
The Bridegroom is Not a Metaphor
“Friend of the Bridegroom” = Greatest man on earth? John 3:25-30, Mt 11:11
Forerunner ministry= “Elijah” Anointing Luke 1:17
“He who has the bride is the bridegroom” John 3:29
He is not “like a bridegroom,” He is THE bridegroom
He owns & cherishes a people who are fully His (He pays the price)
His burning desire is to remove all that hinders love Jer 31:19; SoS 5:4
He is gentle with us if we repent
“I stand, I hear Him, I rejoice greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice”
(John the Baptist speaks for the Bride)
Fiery confrontation & Zeal for righteousness: Joel 2 message of teshuvah
Dedication to prayer & fasting: Daniel 9 lifestyle
Passion for children & Spirit of adoption: Malachi 4 mission
Fearless resolution against any compromise in the way of intimacy
We love others as we love our self = We hate others as we hate our self
Volunteer lovers of Messiah gaze in eyes of a lovesick G-D
“You are friends of the bridegroom” (Yeshua to disciples) John 15:15
Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same
family. So Yeshua is not ashamed to call them brothers. He says, "I will declare
Your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your
praises” MJ 2:11-12
All Jews Shall Be Saved?
Paul’s statement has been taken out of context and misunderstood:
It does not mean that all Jews in history are saved Rom 9:28; Is 10:22-23
It does not mean the entire last generation of Jews will be saved
Context: the partial veil over Israel allows the full number of Gentiles
to come in:
This is a necessary parenthesis in redemption history Rom 11:5-8, 25
IT MEANS: The full number of Jews comes in after the full count of
Gentiles is in! Rom 11:26
Paul makes the point that redemption history began with Jews and ends
with Jews, but includes the Gentiles in between…
God’s economy respects Jewish election, not because the Jews are better,
but because G-D’s calling is irrevocable.
Jewish and Gentile hardenings are partial. There are remnants from every
tribe and nation. Repent and be saved judgment comes on all nations
At the close of redemption history, the last revival will be Jewish
The Gentile and Jewish remnants are growing in every generation, but…
When Messiah comes for His bride, the Jewish remnant in Jerusalem will
see Him and repent whether they have believed or not Zec 12:10-14
As Joseph revealed his identity to his 10 brothers, Messiah will reveal His identity
to his brethren and fulfill His promises of forgiveness and deliverance to them
The Glory of Israel
The Restoration of Israel Promised Long Ago
• For my eyes have seen Your salvation
Which You have prepared before the
face of all peoples, A light to [bring]
revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory
of Your people Israel Luke 2:30-43
• A remnant shall be saved Rom 9:27
• I will call them 'my people' who are not
my people; and I will call her 'my loved
one' who is not my loved one Hosea 2:23
The Testimony of Yeshua is
The Spirit of Prophecy
Rev 19:10
The L-RD knew that no man or nation could fulfill the plan of redemption for Him
